VanceAI Image Sharpener

Removes blur from a photo by matching a model to the kind of blur, on the web for credits or in a desktop app that does not spend them.

Overview

VanceAI Image Sharpener tries to rescue a photo that came out soft. You tell it the kind of blur you have and it applies a different model to each: General, Motion Blur, Lens Blur or Soft Blur. Unlike a normal sharpen filter, which raises contrast along existing edges and leaves bright halos, it works out what the edge should have looked like and rebuilds it.

The web app runs on VanceAI's servers and spends 1 credit per image. You get 10 free credits without signing up, and downloads carry no watermark. More credits come as a subscription or as one-time packs valid a year. VanceAI PC, the desktop app for Windows, works on your machine and spends no credits.

Key features

Four models: General, Motion Blur, Lens Blur & Soft Blur
General model for when you cannot tell
Rebuilds edges instead of raising edge contrast
Avoids the bright halos a sharpen filter leaves
Before and after view before you download
Desktop app batches images without spending credits
Desktop processes locally, the web app runs on credits
Chains into VanceAI upscaling & denoising

When to use

Use VanceAI Image Sharpener if:

  • You have a shot that missed focus or caught camera shake, and it is the only one you have.
  • You know what went wrong. Being able to say the blur was motion rather than focus lets you pick the model built for it.
  • You cannot tell which blur you have. The General model covers that case.
  • You have tried a normal sharpen filter and got bright outlines around the edges instead of detail.
  • You have a set of soft images from one shoot. The desktop app batches them locally without spending credits.
  • You are going to enlarge the photo afterward, since sharpening first and upscaling second runs both in the order that makes sense.

When NOT to use

Skip VanceAI Image Sharpener if any of these describe you:

  • The photo is badly blurred. There is a point past which the detail was never recorded, and it cannot be rebuilt. A heavily smeared shot stays lost.
  • You sharpen photos often and will not pay. Ten free credits cover ten photos, then every job costs. Other image sharpeners will sharpen a photo for nothing.
  • The photo is noisy rather than blurry. Grain and blur are different faults, and VanceAI's denoiser is the tool aimed at that one.
  • You want to control the sharpening by hand, area by area. This is one automatic pass, and Adobe Photoshop gives you the selective control.
  • The result has to be faithful. Rebuilt edges are the model's best guess, so this is the wrong route for evidence or documentation.

Frequently asked questions

A normal sharpen filter does not add detail at all. It finds edges that already exist and increases the contrast either side of them, which fools the eye into reading the picture as sharper. Push it and you get the telltale bright outlines, called halos, plus crunchy noise. This works the other way round: it estimates what the edge should have looked like before the blur and rebuilds it. That is why it can help a photo a filter cannot, and also why what it adds is an informed guess.

Because the blurs have different causes and need different fixes. Motion blur smears detail in one direction, from the camera moving or the subject moving through the frame. Lens blur is a focus miss, and spreads detail outward evenly. Soft blur is milder and has several causes. Telling it which one you have points it at the model trained for that pattern. If you cannot tell, use the General model.

Probably not. Blur destroys information. A mild miss leaves most of the detail present but spread out, and that is recoverable. A badly smeared photo has lost it, so anything the model puts back is invention rather than recovery. Expect a soft photo to improve and a ruined one to stay ruined. Try it on the free credits before assuming your worst shot is saveable.

The web app uploads your photo to VanceAI's servers and spends 1 credit per image, so your usage is capped by the credits you hold. VanceAI PC does the work on your own computer. That is why it does not spend credits and can process as many images as you like for the length of the subscription. VanceAI Lite is a free Windows client, but it sends the work to VanceAI's servers and spends credits like the web app.

Sharpen first, then upscale. An upscaler enlarges whatever you give it, faults included, so feeding it a blurry photo produces a bigger blurry photo. Cleaning the blur first means the upscaler is working from better information. The two tools share a VanceAI account, so you can run one after the other. The same order applies to noise: fix the fault before you make the image bigger.
