remove.bg
Automatic background removal in seconds: free small previews, credits for full resolution.
Overview
remove.bg does one thing: it removes the background from an image automatically. You get the subject back on a transparent or plain background. It works on people, products, animals, cars and graphics, and a Magic Brush lets you paint edges back in or out by hand. For volume work, a desktop app processes whole folders, and a Photoshop plugin, a Figma integration and an API bring the cutout into other tools.
It runs on the web, as a desktop app for Windows, Mac and Linux, and as an Android app. Free downloads are previews up to 0.25 megapixels, for personal use. Full resolution costs one credit per image. Credits come as a subscription or as pay-as-you-go packs.
Key features
When to use
Use remove.bg if:
- You sell online and need product photos on white or transparent backgrounds for your store listings.
- You need a profile photo or headshot with the background gone, once, in the browser, in seconds.
- You have a folder with hundreds of photos to cut out. The desktop app processes whole folders in one drag, and remove.bg states bulk editing runs up to 500 images per minute.
- You work in Photoshop or Figma and want subjects cut out without building masks by hand. The plugin and the integration do it in place.
- You are a developer, or you automate marketing work. The API and the Zapier and Make connections remove backgrounds without anyone clicking.
When NOT to use
Skip remove.bg if any of these describe you:
- You need full-resolution results without paying. Free downloads are previews capped at 0.25 megapixels. Some tools in our background remover list give bigger free downloads.
- You want to keep editing after the cutout: add text, retouch, adjust colors. remove.bg only removes or swaps the background. A general photo editor covers the rest.
- You need edges drawn entirely by hand, for example for print work. The Magic Brush corrects the AI's cutout, but the first pass is still automatic. Manual masking in Adobe Photoshop gives full control.
- You mostly edit on an iPhone. There is an Android app but no official iPhone app.
Frequently asked questions
Partly. Processing a photo on the website and downloading a preview image is free for personal use. Signing up adds one free credit for a full-resolution download, and the API and apps carry 50 free previews a month. Beyond that, each full-resolution image costs one credit, paid by subscription or as a one-time credit pack.
Free previews are capped at 0.25 megapixels, fine for a screen but not for print. Paid downloads keep the original resolution, up to 50 megapixels.
Pay-as-you-go credits are a one-time purchase, and remove.bg states they do not expire. Subscription credits work the other way: they renew each billing period and unused ones expire at the end of it, rather than rolling over. If you cancel, leftover subscription credits can be used until the end of the period, then they are gone.
There is an official Android app, and the desktop app covers Windows, Mac and Linux. remove.bg does not offer an official iPhone app: apps with the remove.bg name in Apple's App Store come from other developers. Every version, the desktop app included, processes photos on remove.bg's servers, so all of them need internet.
remove.bg says free processing is for personal use. Commercial use, for example store listings or client work, falls under its paid plans. Check the license terms on its pricing page before using cutouts commercially.
remove.bg states that images are transferred over encrypted connections and are deleted 60 minutes after upload. Inside that hour you can re-download or re-edit the same image without spending another credit. It also states that photos are not used to train its AI unless you opt in by submitting feedback, and that it complies with GDPR. The service is a Canva brand, run by Canva Austria GmbH.
