Overview

Removal.AI cuts the background out of a photo automatically. You upload a picture and get the subject back on a transparent background, including the hair and fur edges that are hard to do by hand. An editor then lets you drop in a new background, add text, or fix the edges yourself. It is built for volume: bulk upload, an API, and desktop apps that all draw on one shared credit balance.

It runs on the web, through the API, and in Windows and Mac apps. Free downloads are low resolution, 0.25 megapixels, and for personal use only. A full-size image costs one credit. Credits come as a monthly subscription or a one-time pack.

When to use

Use Removal.AI if:

  • You have a catalog of product photos that all need the background gone, and you want to upload the batch rather than the images one at a time.
  • You want the cutout inside the tools you already use. There is an API, a Figma plugin and a Photoshop integration, all on the same credits.
  • You cut out photos in bursts and do not want a subscription. The lifetime pack is a one-time purchase, and the vendor states those credits last for three years.
  • Your subjects have hair or fur. Those edges are what the automatic detection is built to handle.
  • You want to finish the image in the same place. The editor adds backgrounds, text and manual edge fixes after the cutout.
  • You want to check the quality before paying. Previews are free and unlimited.

When NOT to use

Skip Removal.AI if any of these describe you:

  • You need full-size cutouts free, or you are cutting out photos for a business. The free version is 0.25 megapixels and personal use only, and anything more costs a credit. Compare the free tiers of other background remover tools.
  • Your files are not JPG or PNG, or they are large. Removal.AI takes .jpg and .png up to 12 MB, and resizes anything over 36 megapixels.
  • What you want is a finished product photo, with scenes and templates. Photoroom is built for that.
  • You cut out a photo once a year. Credits are sold in packs and plans built around repeat use.
  • You want a full editor around the cutout. The tools here stop at backgrounds, text and edge fixes.

Frequently asked questions

Previewing is. You can run as many images as you like and see the cutout. The vendor states the free version covers low-resolution images, 0.25 megapixels, for personal use. Commercial work and full resolution need a plan. Signing up gives you one credit for a full-size download. After that, one credit gets you one full-resolution image, whether you use the website, the API or the desktop app.

On a monthly subscription, unused credits roll over while you keep paying, up to 5x your monthly allowance, and they expire when you cancel. Credits from a one-time lifetime pack stay valid for three years from purchase. Check the pricing page for the current rules before buying a big pack.

JPG and PNG, up to 12 MB each. Anything larger than 36 megapixels, for example a 6000 x 6000 pixel photo, is resized down to that limit before it is processed.

Bulk mode takes a large batch in a single upload rather than queuing images one by one, and the desktop apps for Windows and Mac do the same. Each full-size image in the batch still spends a credit.

Yes. The Windows and Mac apps run the same automatic cutout and draw on the same credit balance as the website and the API. They install on your computer, but the AI runs on Removal.AI's servers, so they still need an internet connection and credits to do anything.

The editor includes an eraser and brush to correct the edges by hand, so a mistake near hair or a thin object can be fixed without starting again. The vendor also offers a paid manual editing service for images the AI cannot handle. Since previews are free, you can see the problem before spending a credit.

The vendor states that plans come with a full refund within 14 days if you are not satisfied with the results, restricted to 50 downloads. It also states that you can upgrade, downgrade or cancel at any time. Free previews let you test the cutout quality on your own images first.
