Overview

Fotor Open Eyes replaces closed eyes in a portrait with AI-generated open ones. The AI finds the closed eyes and generates replacements, and Fotor states it matches them to the original lighting and skin texture. You pick how far the eyes open: Standard, Medium or Maximum. There is no brush and nothing to type. Fotor says it also detects and opens a baby's or a pet's eyes.

Fotor runs in the browser and as Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android apps. It reads JPG, JPEG, PNG and WebP. Generating needs an account and costs credits, and new accounts do not get free ones. Fotor's paid plans are subscriptions.

When to use

Use Fotor Open Eyes when a blink spoiled a photo you need:

  • One person blinked in an otherwise good group photo and there is no reshoot.
  • You are picking the keeper from an event or family set and the frame you want has closed eyes.
  • You want to control how far the eyes open, with three levels rather than one automatic result.
  • A baby or a pet has closed eyes. Fotor states the tool handles both.
  • The photo needs more work after the eyes, which the surrounding Fotor editor covers in the same project.

When NOT to use

Skip Fotor Open Eyes if any of these describe you:

  • The photo is for an official document. The eyes are AI-generated, not the person's real eyes, which matters for IDs and passports.
  • You have another frame where the eyes are open. Compositing the real eyes across in Adobe Photoshop keeps the person authentic.
  • You cull whole shoots for blinks. Evoto flags closed eyes across a shoot and fixes them in volume.
  • You want to shape the gaze or eyelids by hand. The only control here is how far the eyes open.

Frequently asked questions

No. Generating needs an account, and each run costs credits. Fotor says new users do not receive free credits by default. Credits can be earned in Fotor's Rewards Center through tasks and daily check-ins. They also come with a paid plan, which is a subscription.

The AI detects the closed eyes and generates open ones in their place. Fotor states the new eyes are matched to the photo's lighting and skin texture. You pick Standard, Medium or Maximum opening before generating. There is no brush and nothing to type.

They are generated by the AI rather than recovered from the photo, so the likeness varies with the face and the photo.

There is no way to mark one face. You upload the photo, pick an opening level, and the AI works on the closed eyes it finds.

Fotor works in the browser and in Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android apps. The installed apps send AI edits through Fotor's online service.

Fotor states that uploaded images are automatically deleted within 24 hours.
