Overview

Media.io Photo Colorizer adds colour to a black-and-white photo. The AI picks the colours for skin, sky, clothing and background on its own, with nothing to paint or mask by hand. You cannot set a shade for a particular area, so a known uniform colour is not something you can dictate. It adds colour only and does not repair damage.

The colorize button opens Media.io's image enhancer, which also holds smart enhance, portrait enhance, restore old photos and upscaling. It runs in the browser only and reads JPG, JPEG, PNG, BMP and TIFF. You need an account, and every account gets 5 free credits a day. More credits come from a monthly or annual subscription, or from pay-as-you-go packs.

When to use

Use Media.io Photo Colorizer when you want colour added to a black-and-white photo without any manual work:

  • You have an old family photo in black and white and want to see it in colour without learning an editor.
  • You want the colouring done for you. There is nothing to paint or mask, so no skill with selections is needed.
  • You only have a few photos to do, which is what the daily free credits cover.
  • You already use Media.io's other tools and want the colorizer in the same suite and account.
  • You want the colouring and the other repairs in one place, since the same app also enhances, restores and upscales.

When NOT to use

Skip Media.io Photo Colorizer if any of these describe you:

  • Your photo is also torn, scratched or badly faded. Colour will not hide damage, so run a photo restoration tool over it first and colourize afterwards.
  • You need exact colours, like a known uniform or a remembered dress shade. The AI guesses and gives you no per-area control, so hand colouring in an editor is the reliable route.
  • You have a large family archive to colour for free. 5 credits a day does not go far, so a big batch runs into that ceiling day after day.
  • The photo is confidential. It is uploaded to Media.io's servers to be processed, though the vendor states colorized photos are deleted a few hours later.

Frequently asked questions

Up to a point. You need a Media.io account, and every account gets 5 free credits a day to spend across its tools. Once they are used up you need a plan, sold as a monthly or annual subscription with optional pay-as-you-go credit packs.

No. It only adds colour. If your photo is torn, scratched or badly faded, colouring it will not repair that damage. Restore the photo first with a dedicated restoration tool, then colourize it.

No. The AI chooses colours for each part of the photo on its own, and there is no way to set a specific shade for a specific area. If you need an exact colour, hand colouring in a full editor is more reliable.

JPG, JPEG, PNG, BMP and TIFF. The colorize button opens Media.io's image enhancer, which also carries smart enhance, portrait enhance, restore old photos and upscaling. The same upload can go through those as well.

The vendor states that uploads are protected with SSL encryption and that colorized photos are deleted automatically a few hours after processing. The images are handled on Media.io's servers rather than on your device.
