Overview

Media.io's Age Filter changes how old someone looks in a photo. You upload a portrait, then pick kid, teen, adult, midlife or senior, or type an exact age. The face is rebuilt at that age: wrinkles and grey hair one way, smoother skin the other. It is entertainment, not a forecast. Nothing in a photo shows how a person will age.

It runs in the browser and needs an account. Every account gets 5 free credits a day, and one age change spends 3 of them. Downloads carry no watermark. On the free plan the result has to be public, and keeping it private needs a paid plan. Paid access is a subscription or credit packs.

When to use

Use Media.io's Age Filter if:

  • You are curious what you might look like older, and you are treating the answer as entertainment.
  • You are making a before and after post for social media, which is what this format is built around.
  • You want to explore a range of ages from one photo rather than getting a single fixed result.
  • You want the face to stay recognisably yours instead of turning into a cartoon.
  • You have a clear, well-lit, front-facing portrait, which is what it needs to work from.
  • You want to try it without paying, since the free daily credits cover a run.

When NOT to use

Skip Media.io's Age Filter if any of these describe you:

  • You want to know how you will age. Nothing in a photo carries that information, so what you get is a plausible average, not a forecast about you.
  • Your photo is old, damaged or faded. This changes apparent age, it does not repair anything. A photo restoration tool is what that needs.
  • Your portrait is dark, blurry, angled or half in shadow. Face detection needs a clear front-facing view, and a poor input produces a poor result.
  • You want a stylised or cartoon version of yourself. Other fun AI face tools cover that ground.
  • The image is for anything official or identity-related. A generated face is not a photograph of you and should never stand in for one.

Frequently asked questions

No. How a face ages depends on genetics, health, sun exposure, weight, smoking and luck, and none of that is visible in a selfie. The model shows what faces like yours typically look like at that age, based on the photographs it was trained on. That is an average, not a forecast about you.

A clear, well-lit portrait looking straight at the camera. The model has to find the face and map its features before it can rebuild them, so anything that obscures that makes the result worse. A face turned to the side, sitting in deep shadow, out of focus, or partly covered by hair, sunglasses or a hand gives it much less to work from. Group photos are also weaker, since each face gets less attention. If your result looks wrong, the input is usually the reason rather than the model.

That is what it is built for. It aims to hold the bone structure and expression while changing the things that read as age. It is still generating a face rather than photographing one, so a drift in the likeness is normal. The further you push the age from your real one, the more the model is inventing. At the extremes you are looking at a plausible person, not an older you.

You need a Media.io account, and every account gets 5 free credits a day. One age change spends 3 of them, so a free account covers about one run a day. The download carries no watermark. Free results have to be set to public, and turning that off is what a paid plan buys. Paying is a membership subscription or one-off credit packs.

You can, though it may not be the tool you want. This changes how old a face looks. It does not repair scratches, fix fading or sharpen a soft scan, so an old photo goes in damaged and comes out damaged at a different apparent age. If your actual goal is bringing an old photograph back to life, a restorer is the right tool and this is not it.
