Ezgif

The free browser toolbox for GIFs: make, edit, shrink and convert with no account.

Overview

Ezgif is a free online toolbox for animated images. It makes GIFs from a set of images or a video clip. It then covers what you do to a GIF afterward: resize, crop, change speed, reverse, add text, split into frames, and optimize the file size. It also converts between GIF, APNG, WebP, AVIF, MP4 and WebM. Each tool is its own simple page, and outputs can be sent straight into the next tool.

It runs in the browser only, with no account and nothing to install. Everything is free, supported by ads, with a 200 MB cap on uploads. Ezgif's privacy policy states uploaded files are deleted within about an hour after last use.

When to use

Use Ezgif if:

  • You want to turn a video clip into a GIF for a chat, forum, README or documentation.
  • A GIF is over a platform's size limit and you need it optimized: fewer colors, dropped frames, lossy compression, until it fits.
  • You are making or captioning a meme: resize, crop, add text, adjust speed.
  • You need a GIF converted to a modern format like WebP, AVIF or MP4 for a faster website, or back to GIF for compatibility.
  • You want to pull individual frames out of a GIF, or rebuild one from edited frames.
  • You are on a work or school computer where you cannot install anything.

When NOT to use

Skip Ezgif if any of these describe you:

  • You are editing video with a timeline and transitions. Ezgif cuts, joins, converts and compresses video, but there is no timeline.
  • You want designed, branded animations with layouts and fonts. A design tool from our GIF makers list covers that.
  • You need automation. Ezgif has no API, so every job runs by hand in the browser.
  • Your source files are bigger than 200 MB. Trim or compress the video first, or work locally.
  • You need your files to never touch a server. Uploads live on Ezgif's servers for up to an hour after use.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, entirely. There is no premium tier to unlock. The site pays for itself with ads on the pages.

No. Every tool works immediately: upload, process, download. There is nothing to sign up for, and results carry no watermark.

Ezgif's privacy policy states files are stored up to one hour after they are last used with a tool, then deleted automatically. It also states that filenames are not listed publicly.

Yes. Uploads are capped at 200 MB, with 50 MB per individual frame and a maximum of 1920x1920 pixels on the GIF maker. If a video is too large, trim it or compress it first.

Use the optimizer. It offers lossy compression, color reduction and frame dropping, and shows the resulting size so you can trade quality for size until it fits the platform's limit.

For websites, WebP, AVIF or MP4 versions are much smaller at the same quality, and Ezgif converts to all of them. GIF is still the most compatible format in chat apps and older software.
