Canva's add text to photo tool puts words onto an image inside Canva's design editor. The free plan includes a large font library. Eight effects, shadow, lift, hollow, splice, echo, glitch, neon and curve, change how the letters sit against the photo behind them. A background shape separates the words from a busy image, and curve bends a line of text into an arc.

When to use
Use Canva's add text to photo tool if:

Skip Canva's add text to photo tool if any of these describe you:
- You need a specific brand font. Uploading your own font file requires Canva Pro or another paid plan. On the free plan you are limited to Canva's own library.
- You want to add one caption and leave. This is a full design editor behind an account, with templates and a sidebar of options. A simpler text overlay tool gets a caption on and off faster.
- The photo needs fixing first: exposure, a blemish, a distracting object in the frame. Do that in Canva's main editor or another photo editor, then come back and add the words.
- You need real typographic control, such as adjusting the spacing between specific letter pairs or running text along a path you draw. Canva's type tools are simple. Adobe Photoshop is built for that kind of control.

Yes, though you do have to create an account. The free plan includes the built-in font library, all eight text effects, and exporting your image. What costs money is premium content: fonts, graphics and elements marked with a crown. If you use one of those in your design, Canva asks you to pay for it, and until you do the export carries a watermark. Using only free fonts and elements exports the photo without a watermark.
No. It is a landing page for something Canva's normal editor already does. Clicking through drops you into the same editor you would get for any Canva design, with the text tools ready. So everything else in Canva is available in the same editor.
Not on the free plan. Uploading font files is part of the Brand Kit, which requires Canva Pro, Teams, Business, Education or Nonprofits. Those plans accept OTF, TTF and WOFF files. Uploading a font does not grant you a licence to use it. If you are working commercially, check what the font's own licence allows before you upload it.
The background option puts a shape behind the words. It separates the text from the photo entirely, and you can make it partly transparent so the image still shows through. Shadow lifts the letters off the background. Hollow strips the fill and leaves an outline, which works when the photo behind is plain. Moving the text to a quieter part of the image often works better than all three.
Yes. Canva saves the design to your account and the text stays as editable text rather than being baked into the picture. You can reopen it months later, retype the words, and export again with the font and effects intact. That helps if you make the same graphic repeatedly with different wording.

Everything syncs through your account, so you can start a design on a laptop and finish the caption on your phone.
